Katie Holmes was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and starred in several high school theatre productions before she met manager who encouraged her to visit LA and audition during the television pilot season.
She had attended modeling school as a teenager but she had decided that she didn’t want to model because it wasn’t “challenging” enough for her. She also competed in the International Modelling and Talent Association by showing her talent for song and dance as well as reciting a monologue from the well known novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
She followed the advice of the manager and headed to LA to audition. As a result she won a part in the feature film The Ice Storm which also starred Elijah Wood. It was only her second ever audition.
At that time, she also sent a videotape to the show Dawson’s Creek which was at the time a brand new production by Kevin Williamson, who was the acclaimed writer of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Williamson loved her audition tape and she was asked to come and audition for the role of Joey Potter. At the time, Holmes was starring in her high school musical and the audition was the same as opening night, so she had to tell him that she couldn’t make it. However, the show’s producers liked her so much that they rescheduled and asked her back again and gave her the role.
They thought that Katie’s strong personality yet beautiful and sad eyes were perfect for the role of Joey Potter. The character is a headstrong tomboy with a go-getter personality but beneath her tough exterior she is insecure and emotionally sensitive.
This is the role which made Katie Holmes a household name and brought her to stardom. During that first year on Dawson’s Creek she also starred in two films, Disturbing Behavior and Go. She also starred in Teaching Mrs. Tingle in 1999 as a straight-A student with a vindictive teacher who is threatening to deny her a scholarship that she desperately needs.
She appeared in several films throughout the years including Phone Booth, Pieces of April, Batman Begins, Thank You for Smoking, Mad Money and more. She was also ranked as #38 on the TV Guide list of 50 Sexiest Stars of all Time in 2005 and given the Max Mara Face of the Future Award in 2011.
Katie is also well known for her relationship with actor Tom Cruise, who she began dating in 2005. She began studying the Church of Scientology soon after they became and couple and Cruise proposed to her in June of 2005 on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. They were married in November 2006 in a beautiful ceremony at a 15th century castle located in Italy. Their daughter was born in April of 2006 and was named Suri. In 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise after the couple were married for five years, both agreeing for Suri to remain with her mother.
