Her full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, but she goes only by the name of Rihanna. This American recording artist and actress was born in Barbados and moved to the USA at the age of 16 to pursue her recording career. She grew up in a small bungalow in Bridgetown and she sold clothes with her father in a small street stall. Her parent’s marriage ended when she was 14 and Rihanna’s young life was affected by her father’s addiction to marijuana, alcohol and crack cocaine.
Rihanna loved singing at an early age and she grew up with a deep appreciation for reggae music. She met recording producer Evan Rogers in 2003 and began creating demo tapes while under his guidance. After she auditioned for Jaz-Z she moved on to signing on with Def Jam Recordings. Since then she has gone on to become one of the best selling artists of all time, winning five American Music Awards, four Grammy Awards, two BRIT Awards and eighteen Billboard Music Awards.
Her very first album, Music of the Sun was released in 2005 and made the top ten of the 200 Billboard charts, featuring the hit sing entitled “Pon de Replay”. Her second album was entitled A Girl Like Me and contained her very first number one song, “SOS”. It was her third album that really sent her skyrocketing to success, with several international hit singles including “Don’t Stop the Music”, “Umbrella”, “Disturbia” and “Take a Bow”. This album was nominated for 9 Grammy Awards and the song “Umbrella” won for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
Rihanna went on to create her fourth album, Rated R, which included the song “Rude Boy” which achieved the number one spot on the Hot 100 Billboard charts. Her fifth album Loud was even more successful, with three number one hit singles; “What’s My Name?”, “S&M” and “Only Girl (In the World)”. She has also created a sixth album entitled Talk That Talk with the hit single “We Found Love” and a seventh album Unapologetic with the lead single “Diamonds”. She has become the youngest solo artist to ever accomplish the feat of having 12 number one songs on the Billboard charts.
In 2012, she was ranked by Forbes as the 4th Most Powerful Celebrity of the year and she was named by Time Magazine as one of the most influential people in the world. She is known for her ability to blend R&B with Caribbean music, such as dancehall and reggae. Two of her biggest influences are Bob Marley and Madonna and Rihanna has said that she aspires to be the “black Madonna”. She also lists Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Beyonce Knowles.
Rihanna’s constantly evolving style, brazen confidence and sexy Caribbean inspired rhythms have made her one of the biggest artists of the current music scene. She is the most popular person on Facebook and she has the fourth most followers of anyone on Twitter. She also is the most commonly viewed female musical artist on YouTube.
