Britney Spears is an American entertainer and recording artist who became a prominent figure in the 1990s pop music industry and then subsequently became more famous for scandals in her personal life than her music.

She was born in McComb Mississippi and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, performing several acting roles as a child in stage productions and television shows. As a child she was a dancer and also was very talented at gymnastics, winning several competitions from a young age. She also loved to sing as became a member of the All New Mickey Mouse Club in 1989. Her fellow “Mouseketeers” at the time included Ryan Gosling and J.C. Chasez and Justin Timberlake of N*SYNC.

Britney got her big break in the late 90s when she signed on with Jive Recording Agency. Her first album in 1999 was ...Baby One More Time and its catchy bubblegum pop tunes made it an overnight success and it became the best ever selling album by a teenage solo artist. The single of the same name quickly hit the top of the pop charts. The follow up album Oops! ... I Did It Again in 2000 was also a huge success. She was part of the massive teenage wave of pop music which included Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson who were also former alumni of the Mickey Mouse Club.

Britney Spears soon became one of the most successful solo pop acts in the music industry. She was also one of the most controversial, as her skimpy school girl uniform in the music video earned her criticism from the parents of her young fans who claimed that she was setting a bad example. However, Spears claimed that she was a sweet and innocent Southern girl at heart.

Britney created even more controversy when she shed her sweet little girl image completely with the 2001 album Britney and the single “I’m a Slave for You”. In the music video she writhed and danced seductively with a seven foot python around her neck and a very revealing costume.

In the year 2002 Britney played the lead role of Lucy Ann Wagner in the film Crossroads. She also had a small role in the 2002 Austin Powers film Goldmember.

The personal life of Britney Spears has been under public scrutiny and has resulted in a lot of scandal and media attention. She married childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas in 2004, but the marriage was cancelled only 55 hours later. Later that year, she was married to American dancer Kevin Federline. This marriage received a lot of criticism from the press because Federline had recently broken things off with actress Shar Jackson who as pregnant with his child at the time. Britney and Kevin had two children together, Sean Preston Spears Federline and Jayden James Spears Federline.

In 2006 Spears filed for divorce and she lost partial custody of her children. She later lost full custody following a mental breakdown and since then, her father has taken control of her estate and is helping her to get her life back to normal. Currently, she has regained split custody of her sons.
